Travel Philippines by Kalesa

Traveling Philippines isn’t that great without you trying out our traditional ‘ride’.  We are known for the common jeepney that was left by the american soldiers after the war and was converted into something we can use.  Yes, public transportation.  Why not try to Travel Philippines by Kalesa? Uhmm, not whole Philippines by Kalesa though…lol…

Aside from the popular Jeepney,  Kalesa was the means of transportation since way back Spanish Era.  More than 400 years ago, we were colonized by the Spaniards for 333 years (to be exact!).  Kalesa is a Spanish term for it.  It is a horse pulling a cart that can only accommodate 3 people at a time (5 max sometimes) including the ‘Kutchero’Kutchero is what you call the horse rider that takes care of the horse and the journey.

Kalesa is quite slow, but you would surely enjoy the ride specially along the Intramuros area where the view and buildings are well preserved from Spanish period.  Not to mention the fun when the horse starts pulling over for a power pee! 😀

At present, Kalesas are commonly used in the tourist areas, though rural areas up north still uses it for their common short distance ride.  It is fun and enjoyable riding Kalesa at night when it is not too hot(we sometimes have 45 degrees hot in the afternoon).  Enjoying the tourist places along Intramuros and around the historical Rizal Park with this cart is the tourist way to go.

By the way, all the places I have mentioned were in Manila.  So, at the first stop in the capital city of Manila…  You can enjoy and chill while riding it.  It will be a different experience for all you western travelers that are looking for something to try unique only in the Philippines!
