Believe it or not, we are all have the natural tendency to have dandruff sooner or later. Because of our everyday practices that we are unaware that causes these unwelcome unattractive dandruff that gives people bad hair days as well. Causes of Dandruff
- Washing hair everyday with very harsh chemically made shampoo.
- Tying your hair while it’s still wet. Mold is another cause of dandruff.
- Using too many harsh hair products such as hairspray, hair gel, frequent hair coloring.
- Too hot hair blow dry.
- Poor eating habits (Healthy Diet is recommended). Eating too much processed foods, meat, sugar, strong tea/coffee, junk foods, etc. Avoid eating these and you reduce the risk of getting it.
- Regular use of hat, cap, bandanas, and other head accessories that prevents the scalp to breathe.
According to experts everyone is naturally susceptible to dandruff, but we can avoid by knowing what causes it, I have mentioned few reasons above that might help. However, for those who already have it and for those looking for the cure, please keep reading.
There are several numbers of treatments available, natural and chemically made dandruff treatments. From dandruff shampoos, hair care practices, etc…
Natural/Organic Dandruff Treatments
LIME – Using fresh lime juice when having a shower or just a tablespoon of fresh lime juice for the last rinse will help. It helps to remove the sticky feeling in your hair and so dandruff couldn’t cling on your scalp and hair.
FRUIT DIET – An all fruit diet plus drinking warm water to neutralize body and cleanse it from toxins. Go as long as you can, and you’ll see a great difference not only from dandruff but your complete health and living.
BRUSHING YOUR HAIR – Brush your hair often, this helps to improve blood circulation on your scalp and increase natural hair oil that will help to avoid dandruff. (*Dandruff is also caused by dry scalp.)
OLIVE OIL – Massaging Olive oil on your scalp will help. I recommend mixing it with fresh lime juice, massage your scalp for 2-3 minutes before rinsing.
VODKA – Rinse your hair with vodka or mix 1 tablespoon of vodka to your dandruff shampoo, do this 2 times a week and you’ll see the difference. Listerine mouthwash is also an alternative for vodka.
ALOE VERA – Aloe Vera is known for a great source of vitamin E good for skin and hair. Massage Aloe Vera on your scalp, leave it for 5-10 minutes before rinsing. Do this 2-3 times a week.
EMU OIL – Emu oil is known as one of the greatest skin care out there. Use emu oil shampoos and conditioner will help you a lot to treat dandruff. Pure emu oil to naturally remove dandruff.
COCONUT OIL – Coconut oil works as good as Olive oil, same procedure apply or you can use it alone. Massage it 2-3 minutes on your scalp, leave it for 5 minutes before rinsing. Do this at night weekends as coconut oils have a strong smell you might not like it.
BAKING SODA – Wet your hair and rub baking soda on your scalp, refrain from using regular shampoo when using this. However, the first few days your hair will feel dry, but your scalp will produce natural oils soon.
These are the few natural dandruff treatments for everyone, and there are still a lot available out there. You are welcome to contribute for more… Also, I recommend using natural made dandruff shampoos, even your regular shampoos and conditioner, change it to natural shampoos. It wouldn’t hurt your scalp and nourish it instead.

Chemical Based Dandruff Treatment
These are over the counter dandruff shampoos that you can try. You might want to experiment what from these is best for you. Perhaps, you might want to visit your doctor for recommendation and advice.
- Coal-tar preparations (Neutrogena T/Gel, Tegrin)
- Pyrithione zinc (Suave Dandruff Control, Pert Plus Dandruff Control, Head & Shoulders)
- Salicylic acid and sulfur (T-Sal, lonil T, Sebulex)
- Selenium sulfide (Selsun, Exsel)
- Ketoconazole (Nizoral A-D) available as a 1% over-the-counter shampoo and a 2% prescription-strength shampoo.
Dandruff can cause Hair Loss as well, so it is highly recommended not to leave it untreated. Visit your doctors for help and advice.
