Flagellants Every Lent in The Philippines

How Philippines celebrates Holy Week every year gets a lot of attention all over the world.  Different opinions were formed about it, although even after all the controversy, the Filipino flagellants still do it every year.  Everyone that does it have their own belief on what they want to give up (or wish) in return, some does it every year for no reason at all and they all voluntarily submit themselves to do it.

Every year we go there to witness the same happening, not only flagellants but even the people that sung the verses from the Bible non-stop from Wednesday to Good Friday seems a bit strange to me, until I got used to it.  It took years before I got used to it, it was a scary scenery growing up and when I brought my friend Nick from Canada to witness the event, this was what he said…

“It was totally different(reading it from my blog to seeing them in person).  I didn’t know there are so much people doing it and that there were only 2 provinces that does this (flagellants).  What I could not believe too is how kids are into it and they are not scared watching them do what they are doing!”  – Nick, CA

It’s true though, my brother used to run away seeing the flagellants coming while I used to have nightmares from it as kids. In a way, I find it lucky that my mother was from Tarlac and Pampanga because I would not be able to see all these if not for that.  Not all Filipinos have seen them happening in person too.  Check out the videos and see for yourself.

  1. Wow! I’m sure you can show devotion to your faith without having to suffer like that, but I guess it’s important to them.

I’m not sure I could bear to watch…

    1. I know hey, but this is done by the devotees. They were not forced, they volunteered. I could understand if people could not watch them, because I used to be scared to even look at them. Not anymore though…
